Let’s look at some easy steps to implement to get your students to the next level.
- Read the entire text yourself.
- Select key Tier 2-Tier 3 vocabulary.
- Determine the overall Text Structure of the text.
- Determine dense portions of the text and build Text-Dependent-Questions there based on your State Standards.
- Pre-teach and front load key vocabulary.
- 1st Read: Students read the entire the text for the “Gist” Teacher has brief conversation about the text with the students.
- 2nd Read: Students readd the entire text again. This time summarizing in writing each paragraph.
- 3rd Read: Students read with a partner to practice their fluency.
- 4th Read: Students independently read the text and answer the Text-Dependent-Questions.
- Culminating Writing Task.
