The Science of Reading

An extremely solid foundation in literacy is the cornerstone of a well-designed 21st century school. So, we have heard a little about, maybe a lot about it. What constitutes The Science of Reading?  This is not rocket science. The problem is that there is so much disinformation out there to deliberately confuse us. Let us break this down to digestible chunks so we can help all students.

For students in grades K-2 all students need at least sixty minutes per day of systematic phonics. Phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. The goal is to get the students to be able to decode at grade level. The research is overwhelming that human brains are not wired to read, it must be explicitly taught. The key is it must be systematic.

Now we get into the next component of The Science of Reading deals with Language. We are talking about vocabulary, verbal reasoning, language structure, literacy, and background knowledge. Tier two and tier three vocabulary that students have multiple exposures to is key to growing students ‘vocabulary bank. Literacy and background knowledge is the cement that binds all these strands together. Building students’ knowledge utilizing complex text in a series of coherent texts is the missing ingredient and represents the other half to securing a strong foundation for all students.

Key Points:

  1. Systematic  Phonics(K-2)
  2. Building Knowledge:(Coherent Text-Sets)
