How to avoid the test prep trap.

This is a third post in in describing strategies to raise proficiency in reading scores. Let me clear however, “Test Prep” is NOT the answer. Do not spend money on workbooks promoting test prep. Let’s look at some evidenced-based strategies instead.

1. Grade-level Text-Sets:
2. A. Teacher must read texts and ensure that they align to standards that need remediation.
3. B. Select complex text of said topic and pair it with another complex text of said topic. (BTW: This is how ALL standardized exams are created for reading.)
4. Create extended response writing tasks.
5. A. Text-based writing deepens knowledge and increases reading.
