21st Century Schools: Systematic Phonics: The Science of Reading Day 1.

Come follow me as I implement Systematic Phonics at my school. I will guide and lead you through the structured process so you and your teachers can teach foundational skills that is aligned to The Science of Reading. Ok let’s look at Day 1.

Day 1: All educators need to fully to understand “The Why” behind what we do. The research of why “it” works. When it comes to teaching students literacy, we do not have time to use strategies and/or programs if it is NOT aligned to The Science of Reading.

  • I am implementing UFLI at my school. This systematic phonics program is fully aligned to the SOR and has it’s own research to support it.
  • Remember day 1 is research that supports systematic phonics. I go back to the book published in 1955. (Why Johnny Can’t Read by Rudolf Flesch) After that we discuss the 6 components of literacy. Lastly end with UFLI’s research.
  • Note: This not merely a lecture, but rather a round table discussion to talk about the research and it’s overall implications along with the cognitive science that supports this. “The Why” is critical and quite frankly alarming clear and eye opening. As we move forward on how best to supports ALL students we always strive to provide the research first.
  • Follow me for Day 2!
